Crossovers are usually done by TV networks to make their show line up more interesting. Unfortunately, this doesn't hold true for Fox's attempt to do a crossover on their shows "New Girl" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine".
TV networks decide characters from two different shows appear together to rake in more viewers. According to the post of Slate, this move of Fox only did 1.0 on ratings considering that "New Girl" is already on its sixth season and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" on its fourth. This only translates to 2.5 million viewers per week which is dismal compared to shows of other networks on this time slot. Both "New Girl" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" are critically acclaimed for content and good cast however, it still ranked low on ratings even after the crossover.
On Tuesday night, viewers were treated to the first interaction of the stars of both "New Girl" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine". "New Girl" lead character Jessica Day played by Zooey Deschanel didn't make an appearance until late in the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" episode, The Night Shift. Their interaction happened as "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" lead star, Jake Peralta played by Andy Samberg was in pursuit of a fleeing criminal. He tried to commandeer the car of "New Girl" star Jess Day until the pursuit ended in the car crashing against a garbage truck.
The crossover then took place on "New Girl". Jess Day, the lead actress of "New Girl" was celebrating the recognition of Schmidt's high school. Schmidt thought the recognition was just for him, until he realized the event was just a fundraiser for the school's gymnasium. He was upset. Being the good friend that she is, Jess took Schmidt to the Deli. This is where "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" lead, Det. Jake Peralta came in to commandeer Jess' car recently shared by TV Line.
In all likelihood, this twist is interesting especially for avid viewers of both "New Girl" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine". However, TV critics found this move forced, something that the TV Network asked them to do and be good at it. Network executives most likely are currently taking notice. Hopefully they do something to keep the ratings of both "New Girl" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" at least at par with their competition, with or without crossover.
