'Top Gun 2' Cast & News: Tom Cruise Coming Back? Insider Spills Role Details [Rumors]

The 1986 American drama film, "Top Gun," will soon have its sequel after 28 years as "Top Gun 2" is gathering momentum.

According to co-producer and Skydance CEO David Ellison during the press event for his latest movie "Terminator," Justin Marks is currently working on the screenplay. Marks will update the script to reflect the trend and current world of fighter pilots in the Navy today, E News reports.

Tom Cruise will be joining the movie as Maverick. The award-winning actor is part of the original cast and will portray the same character he played in the first movie. This is already confirmed by Ellison.

In a report from Stuff.co.nz, Ellison added that everyone knows Cruise is 100 percent going to want to be in those planes and shooting it.

Ellison also revealed that Cruise's character has a major role in the movie.

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Ellison said. "It is I don't think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."

However, the actor remained mum about the movie. It is not yet confirmed if his fellow past co-stars Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis, who played as Cruise's love interest will reprise their roles.

In a separate report from Stuff.co.nz, the team has started developing the sequel since 2010 with Jerry Bruckheimer and the original director, Tony Scott. In 2012, Cruise and Scott were spotted scouting for locations. However, the team halted the production following Scott's suicidal in August of the same year.

The arrival of producing powerhouse, Bruckheimer at Paramount, the studio behind the project alongside Skydance the production company, spurs the development of the movie. Bruckheimer is behind a number of high-octane action thrillers of the 1980s and 1990s movies, including Flashdance, Beverly Hills Cop, Bad Boys, The Rock, Con Air, and the original Top Gun, Stuff.co.nz has learned.

Bruckheimer promised that the sequel will be updated to the present global situation. Thus, it will incorporate the progress in military aircraft and the advancement of technology. He tells Bloomberg that technology has changed since they made the first movie sequel. He added, "So, I think we're going to take advantage of what the world is like today, you know with the drones really kind of taking over in a lot of our wars...Is the pilot obsolete? No, I don't think so...we're going to hopefully highlight both worlds."

He gave credit to Scott for the idea and described working with Cruise as a lot of fun, E! News reports.
