Autism Awareness: People Diagnosed With Autism Are Better With Decision Making

Researchers revealed that people diagnosed with autism are better when it comes to decision making. The study pointed out that person with autism are less attached to their emotions compared to those who were not diagnosed with autism. Thus, they are better when it comes to logical decision-making.

A scientist from the King's College London revealed that people diagnosed with autism are better when it comes to making logical decisions. People with autism is said to be free from the "framing effect." Daniel Kannan, a Nobel Prize-winning psychologist in the 80's, said the framing effect is the person's ability to make decisions based on the emotions.

The framing effect often clouds and individual's logical reasoning and decision-making skills. Hence, it is making it hard for the person to come up with a logical decision when placed into a situation where his/her decision would affect one's emotions.

According to the Medical Express, the research, which was first published in The Conversation, highlights the impact of emotions on one's decision making. People diagnosed with autism are not highly attached with their emotions, making it easier for them to find a logical solution to their problem as they are unaware of the emotional impact of their decision.

"Our study adds to evidence of atypical psychological processes in autism, but also highlights that the condition may carry benefits in situations where it may be useful to 'follow your head and not your heart," Punit Shah from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King's College London, said. '"It is often thought that people with autism are 'good with numbers' and therefore more rational, but this theory is not well understood."

Psychiatric Times then explained the concept of Alexithymia. It was illustrated that it is when an individual does not have the capability to understand and explain their emotions, which is common among individuals diagnosed with autism. Their study came into conclusion that complex decisions are correlated to an individual's biological process.
