Earlier this month Bethesda unveiled a ton of hew information during its first ever E3 Press Conference.
Some of the highlights of the developer's event include the confirmation of the highly-anticipated Fallout 4, along with a Doom reboot, and the launch of Dishonored 2.
However, fans of the Elder Scrolls franchise were left disappointed as Bethesda offered no update on the much-loved video game series. According to Telegraph UK, Bethesda Vice President Pete Hines knew that fans were disappointed as no updates were given but indicated that the company prefers to release something when they're ready, rather than bow to public pressure.
"It's rare to have franchises like the ones we have and to have people joking about "when is Skyrim 2 coming out? The reason they say that is because generally speaking that's what you'd be getting with another publisher in charge. They'd be spitting out a Skyrim 2 the year after or two years later. That's just not how we view it. We're not the sort of publisher that focusses on 'what's our 25 titles for 2015′.
We do smaller stuff, we don't publish to scale, we try to publish to quality. Make sure everything we do is noteworthy. Our approach to that hasn't differed. Here and there we might change our approach to how it's presented but we've still stuck to who we are."
Given that Elder Scrolls is one of Bethesda's prime titles, there's a great chance there will be a next-gen title but it won't be coming out quite as soon as people would want it to.
Venture Capital Post wrote that it's more likely the game will be out 2017 onwards as opposed to earlier reports of a March 2016 release date.
It's been widely reported that Bethesda is looking to expand its Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited platform and with the launch of Fallout 4, it's likely that the coming months will be focused on Fallout DLCs.
The publication reports, "Elder Scrolls 6 is still a distant cry in gamers' ears. With the E3 2015 just passed, and with Fallout 4 being the highlight of Bethesda in the event, other flagship titles might only be coming out in 2017 or so."
A similar timeline estimate is put forth by iDigitalTimes; the site notes that it's highly unlikely an early 2016 launch would be announced. Following the schedule of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it took nearly a year to release the title after it was announced December 2010. Bethesda used a 1-year window before an Elder Scrolls titlew as released.
