San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly wouldn't assure Colin Kaepernick that he will start again next week against Tampa Bay Buccaneers. following their 45-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Orchard Park on Sunday. Kelly said he felt that Kaepernick played well but the team needs to run the ball better and improve their passing game.
Kaepernick finished 13 of 29 for 187 yards. However, the 49ers (1-5) couldn't finish drives and had to settle for the three field goals by Phil Dawson. The 49ers also gave up 312 yards.
Kaepernick, who continued to kneel during the national anthem in protest against racial oppression and police brutality, wanted to prove that he's a good fit for Kelly's offense, according to ESPN. Kelly said that the 49ers came to the conclusion that it could potentially jump-start their offense, ranked 31st in the league in yards per game, by making a change at quarterback and replacing erstwhile starter Blaine Gabbert.
LeSean McCoy scored three times to lead the Bills to victory and ruin Kaepernick's comeback. With the win, the Bills now have a four-game winning streak, it's first since 2008, NFL.com reported.
It was also payback time for McCoy, who has bitter feelings toward Kelly, his former coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, for trading him to the Bills last year. His three touchdowns tied his career high while also rushing for 140 yards.
McCoy's 4-yard scamper following a Dan Carpenter kick gave the Bills a 7-3 lead in the first quarter. After Kaepernick hit Torrey Smith from 53 yards that resulted in a run and a 10-7 49ers lead, McCoy scored with a 12 yard run following another Carpenter kick to give the Bills a 14-10 lead, ESPN reported.
Tyrod Taylor 30-yard pass to Justin Hunter in the third put the Bills up 24-13. In the fourth, McCoy's 18 yard run and Taylor's touchdown pass to Robert Woods gave the Bills a 38-16 advantage. Mike Gillislee's 44 yard run settled the final score.
