Thousands of women came to Argentina to protest over the heinous rape and murder of a sixteen-year-old girl. Women were urged by activists to wear black to join them stage a national strike
The teenage girl was Lucia Perez who was said to be drugged and raped before she was killed in the city of Mar del Plata earlier this month. Two men left her at a hospital and said that she overdosed on drugs. However doctors found out that she was not only drugged, but she was seriously and violently abused sexually according to a report in BBC News.
Protesters left their work to let their voices heard. In fact, pouring rain and ferocious wind meant nothing in order to protest violence against women. People from all parts of the world over the internet also supported the said event under the hashtag #MiércolesNegro (Black Wednesday) according to The Daily Dot.
There are also protesters who carry signs stating, "If you touch one of us, we all react!" They expressed their tremendous anger about keeping macho practices alive not just in Argentina, but also all over Latin America.
They even said that despite the effort of President Mauricio Macri to tackle gender issues, they would not expect that a change of attitude from the government will come. All they ever wanted was a cultural change and such massive demonstration is perhaps a sign that it is about to take place.
The march organizers wrote a demand from people to stop working for a while and support the "no more machista violence." Machismo is a Spanish word that describes an exaggerated form of masculinity that leads them to kill women.
The support also comes from Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, and Uruguay. A vigil of support found outside the embassy of Argentina in London was also organized by the Argentina Solidarity Campaign.
