The PlayStation Network (PSN) still struggles today with network connectivity issues, meaning subscribers are missing out on phase 2 of the Infinite Warfare beta.
"We are investigating this problem, and are working hard to regain normal connectivity levels. We thank you for your patience and cooperation,” according to the official statement from Sony officials regarding the issue which couldn’t have come at a bad time for the media giant.
According to Sony, all their core online services are offline. This means some users are unable to even log on to their PSN consoles. While PSN is down, so too are several other websites such as Netflix, Spotify, Twitter, and Amazon Cloud Services.
This is most likely a result of a cyber attack known as “Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS), on some of the world’s biggest and most popular websites. And these attacks seem to be targeting DYN, a company hosting most of the major websites listed above.
DDoS attacks occur when hackers attempt to overload a website’s services by flooding it with fake traffic. NBC New York reports that there have been 3 cyber attacks that caused hours of major outages. The company at the heart of the attack was hit by tens of millions of IP addresses Friday afternoon, according to CNBC.
With this unfortunate event, a number PSN users have been tweeting using #psndown.
A report from Downdetector, an independent website monitoring servers for online services including PSN, shows there is a more concentrated number of affected subscribers in the European continent than earlier reports which mainly affected the East Coast of the United States as well as a sizable number of Asian PlayStation users.
NBC News reported that the Department of Homeland Security is now investigating the attack.
