Depression and autism are two conditions that are often overlooked as it was presumed that individuals with autism are not capable of experiencing mental health struggles. A study then emerged where it was highlighted that teenagers with autism are being placed at risk of depression.
A study published in the journal Pediatrics, which was produced by Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network, suggests that teenagers with autism are at risk of experiencing depression as they are often bullied and taunted due to their condition. The research is a follow-up on the previous study where it was mentioned that depression is common among teenagers diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Clinical psychologist Katherine Gotham from Vanderbilt University Medical Center shared the probable causes of depression among individuals with autism. Dr. Gotham explained that medical and behavioral changes can possibly place the autistic individual at risk of depression. Aside from physical and biological factors, it was explained that external factors should be considered as well.
"We didn't have very much information on what caused depression among kids with autism," Dr. Gotham told Autism Speaks. "However, several research groups had suggested that the connection might stem, at least in part, by kids with autism becoming aware of their social challenges, loneliness and bullying likely play roles as well."
Raising Children also released a list of possible causes of depression among teenagers with autism. One of the most common causes of depression among teenagers with autism is the feeling of isolation. Most autistic individuals would tend to go to regular school by the time they'd reach high school, it is when they'd feel different from their peers and find it hard to socially mingle. It was also mentioned that sending a teenager with autism to a regular school can possibly place them at risk of depression as they would have extra challenges when it comes to coping with their school work.
