Many were surprised about the turn out of "The Walking Dead" Season 7 premiere. Although some expected that it will be Glenn (Steven Yeun) who will die, many did not expect that it will be too violent.
To recall, the season 6 finale has left fans frustrated and hanging after Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the gang meets the Saviors leader, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
During the last few minutes of the show's season 6 finale , Negan was seen holding his barbed-wire covered baseball bat, playing "eeny meeny miney mo". There have been many speculations that Glenn will be the one to take the beating and leave the series, considering that he was the one who died from Negan's beating in the comics. But it was Abraham aka Abe (Michael Cudlitz) who was brutally smashed to the ground first.
Glenn, who was Maggie's (Lauren Cohan) husband, was seen side by side, with Maggie holding on to Glenn while Abe was taking a beating. As we all know, Maggie was pregnant with Glenn's child. Glenn's beating was horrifically brutal, with his eye popping out and deformed face. It was a very sad moment for Rick's group (as well as all of Glenn's fans) to see him die.
And to add drama to the scene, Glenn was heard saying "Maggie, I will find you" to his wife, Maggie.
From the start, the zombie themed series has always been very gory, visual, gruesome, blood-dripping, and disturbing. But the season premiere of the "The Walking Dead" exceeded all the usual expectations of gory details. It was described as "one of the goriest and graphically violent shows that were ever aired on television" by the Parents Television Council.
In a report from FoxNews, Melissa Henson, the program director of the Parents Television Council said that the show have entered a whole new territory in terms of the violence. She added that seeing zombies on human violence or humans on zombie violence was okay but the season's premiere was just very extreme and needs to fall on a new category.
In a statement by Tim Winter, the Parents Television Council President, he noted that changes need to be made in series. In his press release statement, he stated that it was not enough to switch channels as some people like to point out because subscribers are still forced to subsidize violent content. It was given a TV-MA rating, indicating that it is not suitable for children under 17 years of age.
However, Winter told The Hollywood Reporter that this rating may not be enough. The Parents Television Council are now considering the need to have an additional TV rating which would cater to shows that surpass the TV-MA rating.
According to Winter, the content of the recent episode of show is not what the TV-MA rating represents. This has raised some questions if there should be an even more severe rating than TV-MA. With this issue at hand, should we expect fewer zombie attacks and less morbid details in the next episodes?
"The Walking Dead" Season 7 airs at Sundays, 9 p.m. ET on AMC. The ongoing TV series is adapted from the comic books written by Robert Kirkman, currently running with 7 seasons and 84 episodes to date.
