Kevin Durant poured in 30 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 122-114 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, Friday, at the Smoothie King Center.
Durant also made a key block against the New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis and raced to the other side of the court for a layup that clinched the game for the Golden State Warriors. Klay Thompson scored 28 and Stephen Curry chipped in adding 23 points for the Golden State Warriors. Curry connected from beyond the arc four times to reach 1,600 career 3-pointers. He is the fastest to have done so, according to ESPN.
The New Orleans Pelicans were led by Davis, who scored 45 points while grabbing 17 boards. Davis, who scored 50 points on top of 16 boards in the Pelicans season-opening loss against the Denver Nuggets, became the first Pelicans player since 2002 when the Hornet relocated to New Orleans to score 40 or more in two consecutive games. Tim Frazier scored 21 points and dished out 10 assists, while Lance Stephenson and Dante Cunningham each added 15 points for the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Pelicans could only get within six points for most of the first half of the game, including trailing by 48-42 with 5:15 left in the second after Davis scored five straight points, USA Today reported.
Draymond Green's 3-pointer put the Golden State Warriors up by 62-50 at 11:40 of the third. But the Pelicans chipped away at the lead and managed to go ahead 74-73 after Frazier's layup. Curry poured in eight points in the last 3:36 of the quarter to help the Warriors take a 92-81 at the end of the third.
The Pelicans came within 116-110 after on Davis' layup with 51 seconds remaining in the game. However, Durant secured the win for the Golden State Warriors with his block on Davis and the breakaway layup.
