Last week's premiere episode of "The Walking Dead" Season 7 shook the TWD fandom with the death of a beloved character, Glenn. While Glenn's fate was already spoiled by what the original comics told, many fans still cried over his departure from the hit series. Here's why the character has to die according to the creator, Robert Kirkman.
About 17 million tuned in to "The Walking Dead" Season 7's pilot episode to find out who died, as reported by Gamespot. And while they might have expected it to be Glenn (played by Steven Yeun), a lot of viewers were still surprised. Unfortunately, this moment for Glenn has to come. In the comics, he died in the 100th issue of "The Walking Dead."
"So it was kind of essential that that part of the scene at least remained intact, unfortunately," Robert Kirkman told Entertainment Weekly. It didn't come easy for the creator though, as Glenn is the first character to die in the comic after the actor, Steven Yeun, was cast for the role. "It does make things a little weird and more difficult, but at the same time I can't allow that to change the way that I write stories. I just push through it and stay the course, but I do find myself very hesitant to do character deaths on the show."
Meanwhile, after a dark "The Walking Dead" Season 7 Episode 1, fans would be able to breathe in TWD Episode 2. Spoilers via the Entertainment Weekly tease that the Kingdom, a new community run by King Ezekiel, will be introduced in the second episode, which fans will be able to see through the eyes of Carol (Melissa McBride) and Morgan (Lennie James).
"The Walking Dead" Season 7 Episode 2 director Greg Nicotero, who also directed the premiere episode, said that the second installment titled "The Well" would be the exact opposite of Episode 1. "The Kingdom is a place of light. It's a place of life, a place where people seem to have figured it out and have been working together to build a thriving and vibrant community very, very different from anything our group has come upon in the past," he said.
"The Walking Dead" Season 7 airs every Sunday at 9:00 p.m. on AMC.
