Dyslexia in adults is experienced primarily due to lack of diagnosis during childhood. Over 40 million American adults are dyslexic, and one among 10 people in the world has dyslexia. Children with dyslexia are often unidentified, who grow up into adults with dyslexia, thus facing a number of problems.
As previously reported, dyslexia is a language-based learning disability including poor word reading, word decoding, oral reading fluency and spelling but the disability is not just about getting letters or numbers mixed up or out of order.
According to Additude, adults may manifest sign of dyslexia such as trouble in recalling past conversations, recalling names, confusion over words, avoiding public speaking, relying on computer-based tools for spell-checking, do not like long document reading. They would also tend to avoid reading aloud, find difficulty in reading different fonts especially the written fonts.
As per Dyslexia, other characteristics or signs of dyslexia as seen in one's career would likely involve getting employed in positions that hide difficulties, become frustrated at planning meetings, face problems with tests - related to promotions. Behavioural problems include frustration, stressed, low-esteem, self-conscious, confused and fatigue.
The good thing is many adult assessments are available now to handle challenges at work and home. "It's important to view a disability as a difference," says Dan Perdue, an adult with dyslexia. "I can write, I can read, [but] I do it differently than most people. My ideas come to me differently, so even if it's a challenge, we can still achieve things in our own way," he added.
Personal management skills are key to coping in the workplace along with planning and ordering things. Pursuing higher education would be rewarding to beat dyslexia. The most powerful resource on the Internet is Google.
Dyslexic adults must avoid using written materials, use visual aids wherever possible, include visual diagrams, pictures, and flowcharts. Technology is playing a key role in solving dyslexia issues.
