A Florida man was charged for burying his own mother in the backyard of their home as he intended to continue to collect her retirement payments. He is currently facing up to 12 years behind federal prison.
The son was identified as Brian Adams and the mother was identified as Janell Adams. According to reports, Brian failed to notify anyone about the death of his mother, who died in July 2014 due to natural causes. The remains of Janell were found only in June 2015, CBS reported.
U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III said in a statement that the son, 56-year-old Bryan, pleaded guilty on Monday on theft of government property as well as aggravated identity theft. Bryan said that he used his mother's name on her Social Security and pension payment checks to transfer $35,345 between her accounts so he could use it for his own benefit.
During an interview with the United States Secret Service, Bryan said that he used the money of his mother because he did not have a job, People reported. He explained that if he reported the death of his mother to authorities, the money would stop coming.
William Daniels, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida, said in a statement that they prosecuted Bryan for the theft of checks so their interest focused on the financial gain. The remains of Janell were uncovered only a year after the burying by Bryan's daughter Brittanie, contacted authorities when her father told her about what took place.
Bryans is a registered felon who was arrested in 2011 for possession of cannabis. In 2012, he was charged for driving on a suspended license.
The sentencing date has not been released yet and what punishment he is facing since he pleaded guilty. It is unclear what the details of the plea deal are.
