Chicago Cubs Edge Cleveland Indians to Win Its First World Series Title Since 1908

Series MVP Ben Zobrist hit an RBI double and Miguel Montero singled home a run in the 8th inning as the Chicago Cubs edged the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in 10 innings in Game 7 to win the 2016 Major League Baseball World Series on Thursday at Progressive Field.

Ben Zobrist's hit allowed a run by Albert Almora Jr. and Miguel Montero's home run made it 8-6. Rajai Davis hit an RBI single with two outs that sent home Brandon Guyer before Mike Montgomery closed out the Indians, according to ESPN.

The Cubs nearly let the win get away after All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman blew a 6-3 lead with two outs in the eighth when Rajai Davis hit a tying, two-run homer.
Dexter Fowler's homer gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the third. Carlos Santana's line drive tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth.

However, Kris Bryant's run put the Cubs up 2-1 before Willson Contreras' fly ball to center opened a run for Zobrist to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead. A Javier Baez homer put the Cubs up 4-1 in the fourth. Ben Zobrist's fly ball gave the Cubs a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning. A wild pitch by Jon Lester allowed runs by Carlos Santana and Jason Kipnis in the fifth that allowed the Indians to cut the Cubs lead to 5-3. David Ross hits a long drive in the sixth inning to push the Cubs' lead to 6-3. Bryan Shaw took the loss.

With the win, Chicago Cubs Manager Joe Maddon's team halted baseball's longest stretch without winning a title. The last time they won the tile was in 1908 when they defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-1, according to BBC. The Chicago Cubs also became the first club to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit since the Kansas City Royals did the trick in 1985. The Chicago Cubs, who led the Major League Baseball with 103 wins this season, also became the first team since 1979 to win a Major League Baseball title by clinching Games 6 and 7 while, on the road, the Pittsburgh Pirates were the last to accomplish such a feat.

On the other hand, the Cleveland Indians fell short of its attempt to win its first title since 1948 with the club losing its last two games at home.
