A Mexican girl has made an entry into the list of youngest mothers in history, by giving birth to a baby girl at age 9.
According to the reports, the young mother, identified as Dafne, gave birth to a baby girl on Jan. 27 in Zoquipan Hospital in Jalisco, Mexico. The newborn weighed about six pounds at birth. Doctors conducted a cesarean section to avoid the consequences of giving birth naturally at such a young age.
The baby's father is reportedly a 17-year-old and authorities are yet to acquire full information about the case.
"The girl was just over 8 when she got pregnant. The father is a boy who is 17, but we have not found him, since he ran away," New York Daily News quoted Dafne's mother telling reporters at a news conference.
The young mother came to know of her pregnancy status only during the last stages.
"She did not realize that she was pregnant until the seventh month," Lino Ginzalez Corona, representative at Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office, told abc News.
The young dad-to-be was willing to keep the child, and suggested for Dafne to stay with him. When the young girl refused his request, the teen shifted to another place.
However, the authorities are yet to reach a conclusion and decide whether it was rape or child sex abuse.
"We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened. This is a rape or child sex abuse case," Jorge Villasenor, an official at the prosecutor's office, told AFP.
Dafne, who has 10 siblings, comes from a poor family in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, near Guadalajara. Similar to Dafne, in April 2012, a Columbian girl from the Wayuu tribe caught headlines for becoming a mother at the age of 10.
