Managing Motherhood: Holistic Therapy For The Overwhelmed Mom

Being a mother can be exhausting and draining sometimes. Left and right, there are family duties waiting to be fulfilled and mothers occasionally forget to attend to themselves amid these responsibilities. Luckily, there are holistic ways that mothers can practice to avoid getting overwhelmed.

According to The Huffington Post's Katy Batt, a holistic and wellness therapist, maintaining a good bedtime routine is crucial in motherhood. Insufficient sleep is bad for a person's health and often leads to an increased risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, as well as shorter life expectancy, NHS Choices listed.

Batt advised mothers to stick to a bedtime and relax with a hot drink or tea before going to sleep. Lavender oil sprinkled on a tissue or an amethyst crystal put under a pillow helps a person attain a good and calm sleep.

Controlled breathing is also important to avoid getting overwhelmed with motherhood. Moms should allow themselves to go somewhere quiet even for just a short time and just close their eyes. Taking deep breaths through the nose and expelling it through the mouth for five times helps the body relax.

"Me time" helps moms manage motherhood as well. A mom's "Me time" can mean reading a book in bed, watching a movie or a TV show on your own, taking a long luxurious bath with a glass of wine and scented candles, or running or biking in a scenic place. Contrary to popular belief, "Me time" isn't a form of luxury but it is an essential aspect of mental well-being.

According to Woman's Day, scheduling "Me time" for yourself teaches you to enjoy your own company and puts you "back in touch with our own interests," which then creates a "stronger sense of self." "Me time" also helps mothers become better decision-makers, enhance their focus, improves their sleep patterns, give them a sense of accomplishment, helps them achieve their goals and widens their intellectual curiosities.

Another holistic way to manage motherhood is taking one step at a time. A to-do list is common in every mom's daily life. To handle this properly, one must focus on one task until it gets done and move on to the next. Asking for help doesn't hurt either.

Expressing yourself is an important holistic way to manage the stresses of motherhood. It's alright to cry or get teary-eyed and express that pent-up emotion inside. Once the tears come out, you'll feel so much better and feel grounded again.
