British director Rupert Sanders finally speaks about the controversial casting of Scarlett Johansson's upcoming movie "Ghost In A Shell". When details were released in April about the protagonist of the movie being Scarlett Johansson, many believed the choice as "whitewashing".
According to ETOnline, before "Ghost In A Shell" became an anime film, it was a Japanese Manga. Now in this movie, Scarlett Johansson will be playing The Major, a cyborg with a human brain. That is why when fans learned that the American actress was chosen to play the role people believed it to be whitewashing a role that could have been given to an Asian actor.
With all these controversies surrounding the movie, Rupert Sanders spoke about firmly standing on to his decision of choosing Scarlett Johansson for the role. If anything the director said he is proud of what they have come up with. On a report by Buzzfeed, Sanders told reporters that Director Mamoru Oshii, director of "Ghost In A Shell" is one of those who approved of Johansson being picked. The publisher of the original manga series also endorsed the said actress.
Rupert Sanders also said that being able to cast Scarlett Johansson allowed him a wider range of talents because, in this movie, he was able to cast the way he wanted and with Scarlett Johansson, you do not need too many big actors to go along with her.
Although "Ghost In A Shell" is surrounded by issues such as these, fans from all over the world admittedly liked how the teaser trailers turned out. But as spectators say, it is still too early to say how the movie will turn out in the end if it sells or flops - it all depends on how true it will be to the original manga where it all began, probably whether the actor is Asian or American.
