Disney purchased Lucasfilm, and their intention comes with expanding "Star Wars" including another Episode of the film series. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was added to the Episode movies last year. This year, aside from "Rogue One," a "Han Solo Movie" will also be released and a younger version of the characters will be featured, including fans' favorite, Chewbacca.
Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney, has confirmed that Chewbacca will show up in the "Han Solo" movie in 2018, and the movie is set to be directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the directors behind "21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie." Bob Iger explains that this year's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is not the only one in the works. A "Han Solo Movie" with Chewbacca will come after "Star Wars 8" in 2018, according to Cinemablend.
Chewbacca and Han Solo's relationship goes way, way back and during "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope," Chewbacca was already 200 years old. The new "Han Solo Movie" will feature Chewbacca and Han Solo's relationship during their younger days and perhaps, how they met.
The new "Han Solo Movie" will feature a younger version of Harrison Ford and Lucasfilm has already cast Alden Ehrenreich to play the role. Chris Miller explains him and Phil Lord tested the actor during the audition as if it was an action steeplechase. Miller mentioned that Alden Ehrenreich was the first person who auditioned that made them believe he'll grow into the character they are looking for and just the right guy for the job.
Meanwhile, Alden Ehrenreich has recently revealed some details about Han Solo's buddy, Chewbacca. Alden mentioned that Chewbacca will be much younger but not very physically different. He added that the time difference wouldn't affect Wookie as much as it does to a human's look.
Han Solo and Chewbacca's relationship has gone stronger all throughout "Star Wars" episodes. The original novels revealed Han Solo's act of saving Chewbacca from torture and that is the reason why Chewy followed Han Solo around the galaxy. The famous "Star Wars" duo will be back on a "Han Solo Movie" and will potentially feature the start of the relationship as best friends.
It hasn't been confirmed whether Peter Mayhew will reprise the Chewbacca role in the new "Han Solo Movie," according to Movie Fone. However, Mayhew's role as Chewy in "The Force Awakens" and "Star Wars: Episode VIII" will lead to a possibility that he will still be the fans' Chewy. The "Han Solo Movie" doesn't have an official title yet but the release date is said to be on May 25, 2018.
