During the International Conference in Marrakesh, Chinese official denies Donald Trump's claim stating China is responsible for climate change "hoax." China's vice foreign minister Liu Zhenmin said here on Wednesday that "China didn't invent climate change."
Trump's recent denial of climate change science has fumed international leaders, who condemned his thoughts during the International Conference in Marrakesh. Zhenmin joined the leaders and noted that George H.W. Bush played a crucial role in the establishment of the United Nations as a body, and it was during his presidency that the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change was formed, per Bloomberg .
"If you look at the history of climate change negotiations, actually it was initiated by the IPCC with the support of the Republicans during the Reagan and senior Bush administration during the late 1980s," Zhenmin added.
International Conference in Marrakesh aimed to discuss the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Nearly 190 countries gathered to discuss it after Trump's victory as he wants to cancel the agreement. U.S .and China need to co-operate to handle climate issues to comply with other countries.
France President Francois Holande said: "The United States, the most powerful economy in the world, the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, must respect the commitments that were made," according to an Associated Press report. "It's not simply their duty, it's in their interest."
According to the International Conference in Marrakesh, there are five key areas in which work needs to be taken forward: finance from developed countries to flow to developing countries to catalyze low-emission and climate-resilient development; nationally determined contributions - national climate action plans - which now need to be integrated into national policies and investment plans; support for adaptation which needs to be given higher priority; and progress on the loss and damage mechanism to safeguard development gains in the most vulnerable communities.
Capacity building needs of developing countries in a manner that is both tailored and specific to their needs. Fully engaging non-party stakeholders, from the North and from the South, as they are central to the global action agenda for transformational change.
