Caging The Internet: Providing Children Safer Browsing

It is normal for children to be curious wherein wanting to know about how the world works is not unusual. However, according to New York Times, some knowledge has to be concealed from children until they reach a certain age.

Internet cannot be trusted for that matter, as children can type sex-related terms and view explicit content. That is why there's a Safe Search filter installed in Google. Activation of this can block a lot of pornography content.

To initiate the Safe Search Engine, there are a few steps. For a desktop browser, mobile browser and Android/IOS versions of Google App, can be used. It will directly open up the Search Settings page. Checking the box next to "Turn on Safe Search" will do the work.

It can be unchecked too, so don't forget to lock this setting by clicking on "Lock Safe Search" button. Entering the Google Account Password will save this setting. People who use a different browser like Yahoo or Bing can also turn on this filter, as their settings offer it too. According to International News Live, after the Safe Search has been activated, most of the explicit content will not be visible anymore.

Even if the child types a common slang term, other unrelated images will pop up. However, like other filters, this isn't completely reliable. Some disagreeable content may still be noticeable. If such a site is detected, it can be reported to Google. If satisfaction is still not gained, third-party parental control can be used to ensure stricter safety.

Yet, internet is a necessity for children nowadays and eventually something linked to sex may come up. Other children at school or certain books or general curiosity can also lead kids to questioning. Parents cannot do much about it, but be ready when it happens, it is important for parents to educate and guide their children.
