It's not much longer now before a new "Doctor Who" episode graces television. A full trailer for the upcoming "Doctor Who" Christmas special titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" was recently released and it definitely sparked fans' excitement.
The brand new trailer for the "Doctor Who" Christmas special shows almost three minutes of footage featuring the Doctor (Peter Capaldi), Nardole (Matt Lucas), Justin Chatwin's superhero character Grant a.k.a. the Ghost, Lucy Fletcher (Charity Wakefield), and a European villain. Watch the sneak peek for the "Doctor Who" Christmas special below.
Chatwin's superhero character on the "Doctor Who" Christmas special was based on Superman a.k.a. Clark Kent, Parent Herald previously reported. Judging from the newly released sneak peek, Lucy is the episode's version of Superman's love interest, Lois Lane, because they're both newspaper reporters.
The "Doctor Who" Christmas special sneak peek also confirmed that Nardole will fill the companion's shoes until Bill (Pearl Mackie) shows up in Season 10, Radio Times noted. There were previous speculations that Chatwin's superhero costume was hiding a capital 'I' behind the 'G' imprinted on his chest, which means that he could be the Doctor's old enemy, the Great Intelligence.
That can still be possible and it remains to be seen whether there's something more sinister hiding behind the character's heroic façade. The "Doctor Who" Christmas special sneak peek also revealed the special abilities of Chatwin's character such as flight, invulnerability, and super strength -- not to mention his sarcastic wit.
The "Doctor Who" Christmas special sneak peek showcased the Doctor donning a new alias or "agent Dan Dangerous from Scotland Yard, Scotland" (or "the Doctor for short.") The Time Lord could also go by 'Doctor Mysterio' from the title, which is also what the long-running series is called in Mexico.
Other big takeaways from the "Doctor Who" Christmas special sneak peek is the Doctor eating sushi while on the job and Nardole proving that he's smarter than he looks. In the trailer, he corrected one of the Doctor's false claims.
"Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat said that the "Doctor Who" Christmas special "dives into" the world of superheroes, E! News reported. Chatwin described working on "Doctor Who" as "one of the most fun and rewarding projects I've ever had the pleasure of being involved with." The episode will also showcase Adetomiwa Edun, Aleksandar Jovanovic, and Logan Hoffman.
