Charter school founder Eva Moskowitz supported Hillary Clinton during the elections. Despite her choice, she is still optimistic and hopeful about the President-elect Donald Trump especially when it comes to education and children.
Eva Moskowitz recently met with Donald Trump following reports that he wanted to make her his Education secretary. The charter school boss turned down the offer but expressed great hopes for the incoming government.
"There are many positive signs that President Trump will be different from candidate Trump," Eva Moskowitz said, according to The New Yorker. The news outlet pointed out, however, that Eva Moskowitz's charter school cater to African-American and Latino families with low incomes.
These are the very demographics that could potentially be affected by a Trump government based on what he campaigned for. In fact, when it was already known that Donald Trump would be president, Eva Moskowitz grew concerned for her students and their families and wrote a letter to her staff about appeasing them.
America's new president is known for spewing racist and xenophobic statements, which some believe has triggered a growing number of hate crimes against people of color. So, what did transpire in her meeting with Donald Trump to make her hopeful?
Moskowitz wasn't specific about the details to the news outlet but acknowledged that she is generally an optimistic person. She also acknowledged that the issues about education and children consist of a long list of problems, which cannot be solved overnight.
Eva Moskowitz is also concerned by how much the American public wants a President-elect Donald Trump to fail. "[But] we have to work with the future President of the United States," she said.
She already started working with the Trumps when she gave Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, a tour of her school in Harlem after her meeting with the president-elect. When the public learned of this, protesters immediately rounded up at her home, New York Daily News reports.
Many chided the charter school boss for not even criticizing Donald Trump. Angel Martinez of the New Settlement Parent Action Committee questions why Eva Moskowitz is supporting a man "who says these kids are terrorists, that their families don't belong here," according to Chalkbeat.
