At the middle of "Black Mirror" Season 3, a throwback scene was featured and took the viewers back in the decades when a feel-good love story is still at its finest. The episode is different from the others as it resulted in a happy ending, which is very unusual.
Titled as "San Junipero," the episode of "Black Mirror" Season 3 showed young couple Yorkie, played by Mackenzie Davis, and Kelly, portrayed by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, got their consciousness submitted to a cloud. The newly married couple, who could not legally get married in 1987, was seen by the audience enjoying their afterlife together in a somewhat imaginary city. In the end, viewers realized that "San Junipero" is actually a "nostalgia" therapy, according to Hollywood Reporter.
Not only is the episode being praised about by the nostalgic 1980s feel, it was critically acclaimed due to the LGBT storyline it presented. "San Junipero's" popularity is also coupled with theories of its conclusion. "Black Mirror" Season 3 director Owen Harris confirmed that the duo will truly end up together in eternity, but he also disclosed some factors that may affect their love story.
"Even though you're left with this uplifting, optimistic feeling, beneath the surface there is something slightly lurking in terms of the decisions that we do make. It asks the questions: What would you do? Would you choose San Junipero? It's working on different levels," the "Black Mirror" Season 3 director said to the publication.
