'Doctor Who' Season 9 Trailer Released: More Maisie Williams [Video]

The second trailer for the ninth season of "Doctor Who" has been released with a few more looks at Maisie Williams.

According to the Los Angeles Times, ever since BBC dropped the news about the "Game of Thrones" actress, Maisie Williams, joining the ranks of Peter Capaldi (the Doctor) and Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) for the ninth season of "Doctor Who," fans have been eagerly waiting for updates about her role in the show.

Nothing about Williams' role is visually described in detail as one can only see split-second flashes of her face in the action-packed trailer. And with that, expectations have risen higher than ever.

So what will Williams' role be in the series?

There are a lot of theories and speculations as to what it will be, and this just adds up to the excitement.

Barry Rice of Fansided says that one thing is for sure — Williams won't be playing the role of a returning character.

According to the website, the mystery role got even more mysterious when it was found that Williams' episodes were part of two stories "linked" with something in common: the first episode, "The Girl Who Died," which took place in the time of the Vikings and the second episode, "The Woman Who Lived," which was set in the 18th century.

Fans have been speculating, that, probably, Williams will be portraying the role of someone from the Doctor's past. She could probably play the Doctor's granddaughter, Susan, or his cloned daughter, Jenny, or Romana, or River Song, or a younger Missy or Clara — the options are many.

However, all of these speculations have been crushed by what showrunner, Steven Moffat, announced at the Television Critics Association (TCA) about Williams' role. He said, "Once you see what she's up to you'll appreciate what a clever idea [her role] was. It's a significant role, we're not just throwing her away. It's a great part and she's terrific in it," Moffat said. "One thing I think is worth saying, because it keeps coming up as an issue, is that she is not playing a returning character. She's a new character, she's not a character from the Doctor's past."

Moffat even told USA Today reporter, Bill Keveney, point blank, "It's not Susan. It's not his daughter."

So okay, excited fans, who cannot wait will just have to push themselves to wait for the airing of the series on September 19.
