Due to the increase in mental and behavioral disorders in children, psychiatrists are considered more helpful than ever. A child psychiatrist treats children to give their lives balance and sustainability. However, a recent incident shows that professionals could also take advantage of their patients, especially the children.
Children and their parents confide in child psychiatrists, who are ethically and professionally bound to keep that level of confidence from their clients. Unfortunately, there are some who use their profession to take advantage and psychiatrists are no exception.
Just a week ago, a West Australian psychiatrist Aaron Voon was caught making a video of a young boy in the bathroom in Edmonton. According to ABC News the child psychiatrist confessed making inappropriate videos of children in Perth Australia and other countries as well. Investigations have gathered more evidence of Aaron's misconduct, including videos and pictures of children while they were using urinals.
Voon has pleaded guilty in Perth Magistrates Court to nine charges regarding videos made in Perth, Edmonton, Queenstown New Zealand and San Fransisco USA. The Australian courts will be placing charges against him. Voon has ceased his medicine practice since the court's decision is pending. He is currently released on bail.
It is quite ironic that a mental therapist and a practitioner needed psychological help all along. Australian Herald also shared the news of Voon's ill practice and stated that his lawyer had requested the court to keep Aaron's psychological and psychiatric analysis in the view while making a decision. Voon is currently facing charges of possessing and creating Child Pornography and Voyeurism.
Such incidents are harmful not just for children who get affected by these recordings, but also make people question the credibility of all the psychiatrists and psychologists. Aaron Voon was considered a well-reputed psychiatrist in Australia until he was caught.
But a question arises here whether vulnerable children could still be at risk while they are with their psychiatrists. It is better for parents to ensure that their child is safe at the therapy sessions.
