'The Grand Tour': Richard Hammond On Similarities, Differences Of Show To 'Top Gear'

Richard Hammond, one of the three main presenters of the new Amazon original series "The Grand Tour," took part in a sit-down interview to discuss what the fans can expect.

In an interview in New York City with Digital Trends, Hammond talked about the similarities and difference of the show to their old BBC One program "Top Gear," which he, Jeremy Clarkson and James May presented for 13 years. Clarkson's contract was not renewed in 2015 after an altercation with a producer. His departure prompted May, Hammond and executive producer Andy Wilman to follow suit, refusing to do the show without him.

Now, the three have reunited to form "The Grand Tour," Hammond asserts that he, along with Clarkson, May and Wilman only intend to make "the best show (they) can" moving forward. "We haven't wasted the opportunity to reinvent, revitalize (and) renew. That's great (at) our stage in our careers," he said.

But Hammond adds that it does not mean that they will stop being us, as he feels that it would be "artificial" for them to do so. "We're still us. It's still familiar. People will come to us because they've liked what we've done historically. We would be stupid to throw all that away," he stressed.

When asked what it takes to get a Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder together in one place, Hammond reveals they used the usual means ("annoying, nagging"). But it all came down to their eagerness to get the aforementioned hyper cars, specifically for the first episode, to leave a mark.

Filming for more episodes "The Grand Tour" are still underway, with their latest stop being in Fort Augustus, Scotland. On Friday, stunt drivers for the show were caught driving around town wearing rubber masks of the stars of the Amazon Prime series, according to the Daily Mail.
