'Star Trek: Discovery' Ex-Showrunner Bryan Fuller Says Series Has 'Understand Each Other' Theme - What Does It Mean?

Bryan Fuller might no longer be involved in "Star Trek: Discovery" under any capacity, but he still knows the heart of the story in the new CBS All Access series. Having written much of what will happen in the first season, he has a pretty good grasp of the show's main theme.

But since he's not going to be involved in the production, which will begin in January 2017, Bryan Fuller said that he has no idea how this theme will play out. Asked to describe the new "Star Trek: Discovery" he supplied only three words.

"Understand Each Other," he told Radio Times. He also said that he's curious about how the new showrunners will be pushing this theme but didn't expound on what it actually means. "I know where we were going before I left, but I don't where they were going to take it after I've left," he said.

Bryan Fuller announced he was quitting "Star Trek: Discovery" in October. He cited his obligations with another series -- "American Gods" on Starz -- as the reason for his departure. Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts are taking over his showrunning duties.

Meanwhile, executive producer Alex Kurtzman told IGN that he's "very excited" for "Star Trek: Discovery" especially with the casting of Michelle Yeoh. "[She] gets to play a part that has so many dimensions to it and is so perfect for where we want to go," Alex Kurtzman said. The actress is playing Captain Georgiou of the Starship Shenzhou in the series.

So far, aside from Yeoh, the show has also cast Doug Jones as an alien species officer and Anthony Rapp as a gay fungus expert. Other casting announcements are expected to come in the coming weeks as production prepares for work. "Star Trek: Discovery" is expected to launch in May 2017 on the CBS streaming platform.
