The Oscars 2017 is definitely better compared to the one shown earlier Feb. of this year. Many have reacted that the Oscars 2016 have been purely and solely dominated by White actors, actresses and filmmakers making others wonder if the Oscars is mired with racism.
This year, according to LA Times many eyebrows were raised after the Oscars 2016 nominees were announced. The nominees were all white were chosen in the top four categories. This happened for the second year in a row.
It definitely will not come to a surprise that angst and disappointment will be taken to social media. The resurgence of #OscarsSoWhite then circulated around Hollywood by anyone who wishes to express their dismay over the alleged racism in the Academy Awards.
This is not the case for Oscars 2017. From the report of Huffington Post, the Oscars 2017 can be considered historic because theoretically all four acting Oscars go to someone of color and that is highly likely t happen. This is from a standpoint of Tom O'Neil, editor of awards prediction website, Goldderby.com.
One of the movies which is expected to do well in Oscars 2017 is "Moonlight." It is a heart-wrenching, contemporary tale of a black boy growing up in Miami. This young boy is plagued with bullying, his sexual identity and drugs. Though the movie has a lack of known actors, it has gained the best reviews.
Another movie is the very inspirational "Hidden Figures" about three black women who worked with NASA's early space mission. The movie stars Hollywood greats Octavia Spencer and Taraji P. Henson and joined by newcomer, singer Janelle Monae.
There are also other movies worthy of winning any of the Oscars 2017 categories. It is also reported that that racism may not be an issue for lack of people of color not making it as part of the list.
It is also possible that there is a lack of strong candidates. At least this is no longer the case for Oscars 2017. If lack of candidates is indeed the problem, then it is sure that many talented people of color will be featured in the years to come.
