Michelle McNarma, crime writer, Patton Oswalt's wife, died unexpectedly in her sleep on April 21 in their Los Angeles home at the age of 46. Oswalt became a single parent and a widow after her death to a 7-year-old daughter, Alice.
Because of his loss, he had gained strength to write on being a dad according to GQ. It's Oswalt's way of reflecting on his essay, in hopes that his experience may resonate with someone lurching from the death of a loved one.

Since his wife's death, Patton Oswalt has been posting beautiful sentences about his wife on Twitter. He also adds a heart-wrenching quote from their 7-year-old daughter according to The Huffington Post.
However, Patton Oswalt admits that he isn't going to carry on the pain for some theoretical parent out there. He's dedicated to being the best father he can be because of their daughter. According to Oswalt, he promised to continue moving forward and trying his best to be a great single dad to Alice because of the kind person she is. Their daughter got so much of his wife in her. And his wife was living her life moving forward and took Oswalt with her. Just like he knows their daughter will.
Oswalt's story has already smitten a chord along with his fans, as he's incorporated his grief into stand-up sets and has spoken frankly regarding his late wife on "Conan." within the essay, he encourages all those who've found themselves during a similar scenario never to lose hope, because if he can do it, so can we all.
