Disney's 'Cruella De Vil' Live-Action With Emma Stone Has Snagged Its Director

Disney's "Cruella De Vil" live-action version with Emma Stone is slowly moving forward. Talks are that the movie might have already found its director, which means production could start soon.

The Hollywood Reporter cites that Alex Timbers, the creator of the Amazon series "Mozart in the Jungle," is being wooed to direct "Cruella de Vil." Timbers is also known for his work in Broadway productions like "Peter and the Star Catcher" and "Rocky." His extensive theater background has earned him two Tony nominations.

According to Variety, Disney also considered theater director Sam Gold for the task. But does this suggest that the "Cruella de Vil" live-action will be a musical or at least have a Broadway theater vibe?

Emma Stone was cast in the role in April and as far as singing goes, she has proven herself in the critically-lauded "La La Land." She can tackle a musical, if this is the direction Disney is taking for the "Cruella de Vil" live-action.

Cruella De Vil was introduced in the 1961 Disney animation "101 Dalmatians" as the villain. In this story, she headed a fashion house that turned Dalmatian hair into fur coats and other pieces. In the 1996 live-action take, which was produced by John Hughes, Glenn Close played the role that has earned her acting nominations.

The new movie is said to be about the origin story of the character. It will depict a younger Cruella and how she developed her hate for animals.

Disney has set "Cruella De Vil" for a 2018 release, but no exact movie date has been announced yet. Pre-production is supposed to begin in early 2017.

The "Cruella De Vil" live-action is one in a dozen of other live-action plans set by Disney, which includes "Mulan," "Lion King," "Aladdin" and "Snow White," among others. In March, the much-awaited "Beauty and the Beast" live-action with Emma Watson will finally make its movie debut.
