Child Abuse Prevention Month in US

The month of April is known as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the U.S. Since 1983, families and communities in the country have been working together to help eliminate child abuse.

Research conducted by the National Children's Alliance showed that more than 800,000 children are victims of abuse or neglect in the country. Neglecting a child is the most common form of abuse, which often results in physical abuse. Statistics reveal that one in three girls and one in three boys are sexually assaulted before they are 18.

WBTW News13 reported that the Pee Dee Coalition against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in Florence bring events and programs all month long to the community, to raise awareness and educate the public about this crucial issue.

"Everyone plays a role in being a part of the initiative, you know someone whose been a victim, whether or not you know, you know them, you do, so please join with us and maybe it'll start a conversation," said Ellen Hamilton, Executive Director of The Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

The organization also conducts various programs. On April 20 there will be a 5K Run/Walk at Fitness Forum on 120 East Elm Street at 8:00am; on April 23 there will be a National Crime Victims Rights Week Community Awareness Exhibition and Live Cast at SIMT at 10 a.m.; and on April 27 the highly-anticipated 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' event will take place, where teams of males will wear heels and walk a mile for a good cause.
