Matt Damon leads the first three films of "The Bourne" series, which was inspired by Robert Ludlum's books that revolve in the story of Jason Bourne. In the fourth franchise, the film introduces a new character, Aaron Cross, played by Jeremy Renner. However, Damon is set to return for "Bourne 5" and the production had already found the villain for its upcoming spy-thriller film.
As CinemaBlend puts it, "a spy movie is only as good as its hero and its villain." The movie has already a perfect hero in the person of Damon and they need to find an actor whom he can have one hell of an action-packed encounter with.
According to Variety, "Mesrine" actor Vincent Cassel is set to play the villain in "Bourne 5." There are no details about the said role yet, but the report claimed that Cassel will be playing a high-level assassin who will be running after the titular character. Whether he is sent after the amnesiac spy or is out for a personal revenge remains unknown, but it is confirmed that he will be joining the franchise's list of antagonists which includes Karl Urban, Clive Owen and Edgar Ramirez.
Cassel is popular for his roles in films like "Ocean's Twelve" and "Ocean's Thirteen." He is also renowned for playing the infamous French bank-robber and folk hero in the two-part French film, "Mesrine: Killer Instinct" and "Mesrine: Public Enemy Number One." On the other hand, ScreenRant reports that Cassel is best known for his villain performance in the emotionally manipulative ballet director in Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan."
Cassel was recently seen in "Child 44" and will be seen in "Partisan" scheduled for release in the US on Oct. 2. He will also appear in the following films "Tale of Tales" and "Mon Roi" both will premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Moreover, he had just completed filming "A Movie Life," "The Great Mystical Circus," and "It's Only the End of the World," Variety has learned.
Aside from Cassel, among the new cast are Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones. Paul Greengrass who helmed the two films in the franchise namely "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Bourne Ultimatum" will direct "Bourne 5." Aside from Damon who will be back to give life to the popular lead character of the franchise, Julia Stiles is also set to reprise her role as Nicky Parsons.
There is no official name for "Bourne 5" but CinemaBlend reports that Damon suggested to call any future chapter as "The Bourne Redundancy." Production will commence later this summer and the film is scheduled to be released on July 29, 2016.
