How to Make School Bus Safe for Children

A majority of children depend up on school bus to commute from home to the school. As the children are getting ready for a new start at the school, the authorities are trying hard to ensure the safety of the students travelling in the school bus.

Parents should educate their children about the pedestrian safety rules like safe crossing after getting down from a bus. The following are some school bus safety recommendations for children provided by the website patch.com:

  • Ask the child to look on both sides of the road to ensure no cars are passing
  • Ask the child to wait till the driver gives him/her green signal to cross the road
  • Only cross the road when the traffic is stopped

Apart from the children, it's necessary for the motorists to ensure the safety of the children.

  • Stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus with red flashing lights indicating students getting into or out of the bus
  • Changing the route and avoiding a school bus
  • Reducing the speed on school premises
  • Drive carefully, after watching for pedestrians

To inform parents when the bus runs late, the authorities have installed live GPS. Apart from these some school districts, like that of New York have introduced cameras on their school buses to prevent bullying and to ensure discipline.

"If we see a child's behavior on there that is somewhat bothersome, but hasn't elevated to the point the bus driver is complaining about it we can be proactive and say we were watching a bus run today and we saw you jump up four or five times; you can't do that on a bus," Neil O'Brien, Port Byron Schools superintendent told KFSM.
