The portrait mode of the iPhone 7 Plus camera, which allows users to take photos that focus on the subject and blur the background, is one of the smartphone's most popular features. Now Apple appears to be taking more steps to promote the feature - and of course, the iPhone 7 Plus itself - by releasing a new ad.
The video starts with a young woman in Greece and who uses her iPhone 7 Plus in a café to take a photo - in portrait mode - of her grandmother, who then raves about how beautiful the image is. Her interest spreads to other customers in the café and soon all of them want to have their photographs taken. The young woman then goes around a village where people ask her to take their pictures using her smartphone.
The ad has received positive responses. CNET, for instance, says it was touching and "beautifully conceived," unlike recent Apple ads.
Similar to how professional DSLR cameras work, the iPhone 7 Plus camera's portrait mode produces professional-looking images by creating a depth-of-field effect and bringing subjects into sharp focus. Apple first introduced the feature in September last year, but it became available only in late October as part of the iOS 10.1 update, according to TechCrunch.
The portrait mode is available only on the iPhone 7 Plus, which has two cameras to detect nine depth levels. BGR reports that it will also become part of the iPhone 8, the phone that Apple will release later this year in time for the iPhone's 10th anniversary.
According to Mac Rumors, the video is the latest in a series of Apple advertisements that show off the features of its latest devices like improved battery life, better cameras, and waterproofing. This comes amid reports that sales of the iPhone 7 have been sluggish and that Apple CEO Tim Cook's pay was cut as a result.
