An interesting fact about women was revealed by scientists as it was mentioned that most women carry their children on the left side of their bodies. The researchers laid down a few facts as to why a majority of the females would carry a child on the left side.
A research revealed that around 70 to 85 percent of women would carry their infants, children and even dolls on the left side of their bodies. It may be a subconscious reflex for most but the gesture sparked curiosity among scientists.
Identifying the favorable side of one's body can easily be determined, by most, but it was mentioned that using the left side when carrying is not only applicable to mothers. It can also be noticed in toddlers and children with their dolls as well. The researchers also explained that the left-side bias is not applicable to men.
Researchers were then able to point put a few facts on why most women would carry their children on the left. One of the facts being considered was related to brain function. Kids Spot explained the physical touch on the left side of the body positively responds to the right-hand side of the brain.
It was also mentioned that the right side of the brain is responsible for language and for interpreting emotional signals. Hence, carrying the child on the left part of the body makes a mother/carrier sensitive and can easily pick up the physical and emotional cues.
"Left-cradling bias is a distinctive feature of maternal behavior in humans and great apes, but its evolutionary origin remains unknown,'" the authors wrote in a paper, published today in Nature Ecology and Evolution as reported by Daily Mail. "Our findings suggest that sensory lateralization facilitates mother-infant bonding." In addition to the studies on women and the way they carry things on the left-hand side of the body, it was added the majority of the female species in the animal kingdom tend for their offspring on the left as well. So, what are your thoughts on these findings? Sound off below.
