Here's Why Family Groups Are Supporting President Trump's Rollback On Transgender Bathroom Rights

A few family groups are throwing their support for President Donald Trump's decision to reverse the directive on transgender bathroom rights. The withdrawal has been largely viewed as anti-LGBTQ but these organizations believe it's not the case.

According to Huffington Post, groups like the Family Research Council, Liberty Counsel, American Family Association and the Alliance Defending Freedom believe the president made the right call in rolling back the federal guidelines on trans bathrooms. These are the same groups that opposed and called President Barack Obama's directive as "lawless" and a potential for increases in sexual abuses, especially among young female students.

The Obama administration established the guidelines for transgender bathrooms in public schools in early 2016 to do away with gender identity discrimination. It implored schools to open bathroom facilities including locker rooms and changing areas originally meant for women for men's use as well, and vice versa. Those who did no like the guidelines, however, said that the move only made some parents fearful for their kids, who could be abused and violated by individuals pretending to be trans.

Soon after Trump's rollback order, the Family Research Council issued a statement on its official site. The group thanked the president for bringing back a safe learning environment in schools. It also reiterated that over 66 percent of Americans actually do not favor transgender bathrooms.

Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association cited via his blog on The Stand that President Trump's reversal actually protects and brings back the "safeguards for the sexual integrity, modesty, and privacy of the girls and young women." He also said that since transgenderism is a mental disorder, laws that normalize the condition, such as what President Obama imposed, only end up hurting this marginalized group.

National Organization for Marriage's Brian Brown also lauded the decision. He cited via the NOM Blog that the rollback is a "victory for common sense and for protecting our wives and daughters."
