Chance the Rapper is scheduled to meet with Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner this week. Reports say the music artist, who is a Chicago native, is eager to hear the governor's ideas on education and the meeting could potentially forge a long partnership.
The Washington Post reports that Chance the Rapper, whose birth name is Chancellor Johnathan Bennett, and the governor are also expected to discuss funding for Chicago Public Schools. It's no secret that the state is in a financial mess.
In fact, the Republican governor who assumed his post in 2015, is facing a lawsuit from Chicago Public Schools over the inadequate and unequal distribution of funds. According to Chicago Sun-Times, the state might be forced to close the school term early this year if funding remains insufficient.
The rapper announced his meeting with the governor on Twitter. The governor replied that he's looking forward to the meeting as well.
New York Daily reports that Chance the Rapper is no stranger to politics. His father, Ken Williams-Bennett, worked for two mayors, Harold Washington and Rahm Emanuel. The older Bennet also worked for former President Barack Obama while he was still a senator.
Chance the Rapper is also a Democrat who supported Hillary Clinton during the elections. He's been vocal against President Donald Trump's policies as well.
"I hope he's coming in to do some type of federal overturn of our state and city budgets in terms of schooling and housing," the rapper said about Trump when the president tweeted about violence in the Illinois city, according to Pitchfork. "It sounds like he was announcing he was going to war with Chicago."
Ebony reports Chance the Rapper is also behind the nonprofit SocialWorks that support arts and education. He has also contributed to anti-violence and socio-economic initiatives in his hometown.
