During pregnancy, dads often get only second-hand information about pregnancy sensations from the moms. That might soon change, however, with a new smart bracelet that should help fathers experience what it feels like when the baby moves inside the womb.
The digital accessory, called Fibo from First Bond Wearables, comes from Danish engineers. It is currently in the development phase and will soon be tested in a focus group for its market viability.
"We wanted to get the fathers more involved in the pregnancy," Sandra Pétursdóttir, the company's head of research told Huffington Post. "Since they sometimes tend to get a little left out when the mother is going through all the changes with her body and feeling a little life growing in her belly."
Fibo works with monitoring patch device and the bracelet. The pregnant mom attaches the former to her belly while the dad wears the bracelet that collects data. Small beads embedded on the bracelet provide the sensation, thus allowing its wearer to feel when the baby kicks or moves as it happens. Everything happens in real time.
One caveat to Fibo, however, is parents will only be able to use the bracelet and monitoring device for a short period of time. Hence, the company is exploring the idea of a renting scheme for Fibo, instead of an actual purchase.
"By making Fibo, a device the parents rent during the pregnancy, an up-to-date technology and high-quality product can be guaranteed," Pétursdóttir said, per Newsweek. The company wants to support shared experience among parents without doing away with practicability.
Fibo was presented at the Polar Bear Pitching contest held in Finland. If all goes well, the product could become available in 2018, according to Telegraph. Huggies did a similar product concept in 2013, which can be seen in the video below.
