There's a new app launched for anyone planning to be a parent the unconventional way. Just-A-Baby works like a Tinder program but instead of potential dating matches, people find sperm and egg donors or surrogates on the app. It is for individuals who, as the name implies, just want a baby and not someone to raise a family with.
Just-A-Baby was created by two Australians, Paul Ryan and Gerard Edwards. The app was unveiled last Feb. 19 and it already has members not only from Down Under but also from Europe, USA and South America, per NT News.
Hatching Just-A-Baby sprung from Ryan's own realization on having kids. "It was just evident that there were increasing pressures against the traditional models of raising a child and on traditional families," Ryan said.
Some might say the app strips romance and having children the good old fashioned way out of the process. Ryan, however, defends that traditional arrangements, such as marriages and couplings, end up in broken relationships half the time.
Just-A-Baby is a realistic option. "We get married and we're all planning on it working out but what happens when it doesn't and you still want children?" Ryan asked, per Daily Telegraph.
The app creators, however, said Just-A-Baby doesn't just provide matches options. It's also more like an "early intervention in baby planning" where potential donors, surrogates and parents set their plans better before bringing a child to the world.
As such, Ryan and Edwards advocate for getting legal advice first before entering agreements with people on Just-A-Baby. "[It's] going into a biological baby relationship with eyes open. Yes, we're helping you match with someone to help you have a baby but what we're suggesting is you say, 'let's plan this before we have the kid,' Ryan said.
