A firefighter lets a young boy watch a video of the animated movie "Happy Feet" to calm him down after a car crash accident in Mississippi.
The Sun Herald reports that a D'lberville firefighter named Casey Lessard lay down on the ground right beside a child, who was a victim of a car crash accident, to show him the video in response to the traumatic situation that just happened, with the hopes of calming him down.
The one-vehicle crash incident happened in Interstate 110 last Saturday, and several responders came to help.
According to D'lberville Deputy Chief Clay Jones, the Lincoln SUV that crashed was on the exit ramp to Interstate 110 north when suddenly it left the road, flipped several times, only coming to a stop near the D'lberville Boulevard overpass. The SUV received extensive damage to the front-seat area, and the impact from the crash had crushed the roof.
Police are currently investigating what might have caused the incident.
According to reports, six people were in the vehicle when the incident happened: an adult driver and five children. Jones said all of them were taken to area hospitals, with one of the children still strapped into a child-restraint seat.
Rick Camarena, now a resident of Gulfport, said he stopped to help, because he had received training for such an incident.
"I saw five kids ejected," Camarena said, referring to the crash. "I know trauma criteria; I helped them."
Camarena added that others also stopped to help the victims, including two women from Long Beach.
The Long Beach women who stopped to help were 20-year-old Morgan Bogolin, and her sister, 15-year-old Mady. They were on their way to Mobile when they saw the incident and decided to stop to help.
The call for help was made at just before 4:00 p.m. Responding to the call and treating the victims on the scene were emergency personnel from AMR ambulance service and the D'lberville Fire Department.
D'lberville Fire Capt. Darren Peterson said that his firefighters will do everything they can to calm down and comfort children who get involved in a traumatic incident such as this.
WPXI reports that the photo of Lessard showing the kid the animated video is now going viral.
