First Baby Delivery! Newly-Certified EMT Teenager Helps A Mother Deliver Her Daughter

A New Jersey mom delivered her baby at home with the help of a newly-certified EMT teenager. Nicole Segalini, 18, was on 911 duty when they received the call. The baby's delivery was her first just months after getting certified.

The agency dispatched Segalini and her team at the home of mom Angela Windt and her husband Paul in Berkeley Heights. The mom wasn't going to make it to the hospital, however, as the baby's head was crowning. The 911 team had to step up right there in the couple's bedroom.

No one else from Segalini's squad experienced delivering a baby before, according to CBS New York. Remembering their training, however, the crew did their work and Segalini was "the catcher" for the baby.

"I was a bit nervous because I have never delivered a baby before, but I was confident in my training and my crew," the 18-year-old said, as per ABC News. "I wasn't scared, but I was definitely amazed at what we were doing," Segalini added and said it was a team effort.

Thirty minutes later, Windt had baby Ava Sharon, who weighed 6 lbs. and 10 oz. and measured 20 inches long. The mom and the baby were both doing fine after the birth.

Segalini's co-crew member said the birth was a textbook case, which they indeed trained for. The team knew what to do despite having no actual experience.

"Everything happened exactly the way they show it happens in training," Andy Damato said, as per Tapinto. Rescue Squad Chief Sam Lloyd commended Segalini, Damato and the rest of the team for handling the emergency situation with calmness and focus.

Meanwhile, Segalini said she underwent EMT training as part of her dream of becoming a surgeon. She enlisted as a volunteer in the rescue's High School Cadet Program last January 2016 and went on rides two months later.
