A Turkish woman who underwent a womb transplant in 2011 has miraculously conceived after almost one and a half years.
Derya Sert, a twenty-two-year-old from Anamur in southern Turkey, was born without a womb. After receiving in vitro fertilization (IVF) Sert became pregnant two weeks ago.
Doctors at Akdeniz University Hospital used an embryo fertilized with her husband's sperm and were successful in implanting it in her womb. Sert would be the first woman with a uterus transplant to give birth, reported Science World Report
"Early test results are consistent with pregnancy. The patient is in good health at the moment. We will continue to update on developments in the coming period," Akdeniz University Hospital in Turkey's Mediterranean city of Antalya, said in a statement.
Uterus transplants have been generally unsuccessful or temporary. Swedish doctors, last year, successfully performed a mother-to-daughter womb transplant for a pregnancy but it had to be removed later as the body tends to reject the transplant.
Reuters reported that one in 5,000 women around the world is born without a womb and thousands have to undergo hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) due to various reasons.
Doctors say that both the mother and baby are doing fine at the moment. If the pregnancy goes full term, then maybe this will bring some hope for people facing similar health issues and infertility problems.
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention figures, 7.3 million American are reported to be infertile.
