The Season 3 premiere episode of "Madam Secretary" tackled one of the issues that the world is dealing with at the moment - climate change. The political drama's most recent episode titled "Sea Change" showcased climate change propaganda and insisted that the issue requires the attention of authorities.
Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord, who's portrayed by Téa Leoni on "Madam Secretary," stressed that climate change is "not a matter of belief," according to Accuracy in Media. She said that she became convinced of the repercussions of climate change thanks to the consensus in the scientific community, adding that the issue "needs to be addressed."
"Madam Secretary's" climate change discussion centered on a strong storm that destroyed a U.S. naval base stationed in Bahrain. An ensign died during the ordeal after he made other people escape using a vessel. President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine) blamed the ensign's death to the "willful denial of reality by many in Washington and in my own party ... and that reality is climate change: the extreme weather patterns and rising sea levels around the world."
"Madam Secretary's" president said that Washington's denial of climate change made naval bases all over the world unsafe, while the lives of the country's military men and women remain at risk. Dalton said that until the necessary authorities take action, climate change will continue to be a threat to both military and civilians globally.
Another character on "Madam Secretary" said that the Department of Defense recognizes climate change as one of the threats that military forces stationed overseas face. However, the political party's position on the matter has prevented the DoD from taking action. CBS' use of a TV show to showcase climate change propaganda is proof that "bias in the media industry extends beyond the newsroom," Accuracy in Media wrote.
Episode two of "Madam Secretary" Season 3 titled "The Linchpin" will highlight a changing regime in Algeria and Elizabeth will be forced to lend a hand to maintain peace. The plan, however, will not sail smoothly, according to CarterMatt.
The upcoming "Madam Secretary" episode, which will be released on Oct. 16, will also tackle personal security. Elizabeth and her husband, Henry (Tim Daly), will have to come up with a plan on how to protect their family after their son Jason's (Evan Roe) computer was hacked. The family is receiving anonymous threats as well.
"Madam Secretary" airs Sunday, 9:00 PM on CBS. Watch the promo for this season's second episode below.
