Want to get rid of soap scum once and for all? Here's how to clean shower doors and remove stubborn hard water stains, soap scum buildup, and mildew.


Clean shower doors using vinegar and dish detergent

First, you need to heat one (1) cup of distilled white vinegar for about 30 minutes. Then mix the warm vinegar with a few drops of dish detergent. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

Start spraying at the top of the door the work your way down to the bottom. Allow the solution to dissolve the grime for at least 30 seconds. Then scrub the door using a sponge before rinsing it with fresh water. Dry the door with a microfiber cloth.

Use vinegar with caution, especially if your shower is made of natural stone. The vinegar's acidic properties could damage the stone.


Clean shower doors using lemon juice and baking soda

An alternative to vinegar is lemon juice, which is less acidic and smells better. Squeeze a few lemons and put the juice in a spray bottle and add an equal amount of water. Clean the shower doors using by spraying the solution starting at the top of the door.

Once the solution has cut through the grime, rinse it with water then dry with a microfiber cloth. Alternatively, you can cut a lemon into half and then dip both cut sides in baking soda. Then rub the lemon onto the glass door before rinsing with water.

Clean shower doors using ammonia

First of all, never use ammonia with chlorine bleach as they will produce toxic gases. And remember to open the showers doors and windows, and gloves when working with ammonia.

Create a cleaning solution using one (1) tablespoon of household ammonia mixed with one gallon of warm water. Stir it gently. Dip a washcloth into the solution and wring it to remove the excess liquid. Wipe the washcloth on the glass door before rinsing it with a squeegee. Dry the door using a microfiber cloth.

Clean shower doors using borax and baking soda

Make a paste using 2 to 3 tablespoons of borax and mix it with ½ cup of water. Then using a cloth, scrub the paste on the glass doors. Rinse it with water then dry with a microfiber cloth.

You can also mix an equal amount of borax and baking soda. Add water to the mixture to create a paste. Using a wet sponge, apply the paste on the shower doors before rinsing it with water.

How to keep shower door soap scum free

There are ways to keep your shower doors stay clean longer:

  • Squeegee after use to prevent hard water spots and grime from forming.

  • Leave the doors open after a shower to allow it to dry out.

  • Spray water repellent onto the shower doors to help keep water off the glass doors.

  • Consider using liquid body soap instead of bar soaps.

  • Use a shampoo and conditioner that contain less oil.
