Are your tile floors already showing signs of dirt and grime buildup? Here's how to clean floor tiles effectively to make them looking squeaky clean and last longer.

How to clean ceramic and porcelain tile floors

Ceramic and porcelain tile floors are tough and naturally resistant to scratches. Hence, cleaning is relatively easy. To clean these tile floors, make sure you clean up sand and other loose debris first using a broom, mop, or vacuum.

Clean the tile using a commercial cleaning solution and water. Make sure that you follow the package directions. It is recommended not to apply too much of the cleaner to avoid leaving the floors feeling sticky afterward. Also, make sure to frequently change the water when you mop to avoid having hazy or cloudy looking floors.

How to clean vinyl tile floors

Sweep or vacuum the floor first to remove surface dust, dirt, and other particles. While plain water and sponge may do the job of cleaning the floors, you can also use apple cider vinegar to clean vinyl floors, especially for stubborn grime and dirt.

To make your DIY cleaning solution, just mix one (1) cup of apple cider vinegar with one (1) gallon hot water. Before you mop the floor, remove stains that would be difficult to remove by just mopping. For lipstick, paint, crayon, and other similar types of stains, you can remove it using a sponge and rubbing alcohol. Let it stay for a few minutes before wiping the stain away.

For food spills, you can remove it using cleaning paste made by mixing baking soda and water. Apply the mixture on the stain and then rub it with a damp cloth.

How to clean natural stone, marble, or granite floors

Natural stone, marble, or granite floors are porous and can easily attract stains. Avoid using acidic solutions and products including lemon juice, vinegar, and other acids and ammonia-based cleaners. Instead, use a neutral pH cleaner or dish soap.

Also, avoid using abrasive materials to scrub the surface such as steel wool, scrapers, and microfiber scrub pads.

Remove loose dirt first by sweeping or vacuuming the floor. Then mix the cleaning solution with warm water. Be sure to follow package instructions. Dip the microfiber mop, wring it thoroughly, then begin mopping the floor. Remember to frequently change the solution, to avoid cloudy floors.

Once you are done with the cleaning solution, it's time to rinse the floor. Make sure you remove any trace of soap. Then let it air dry.

How to clean grout

Grout is naturally porous, and so it attracts more grease and dirt. Commercial cleaners may not be enough to clean deep-seated dirt. Instead, you can make your own cleaning paste to the job.

Simply mix three (3) cups of baking soda with one (1) cup of water. Apply the mixture to the grout and let it stay for about 10 minutes or leave it overnight for heavy stains. Scrub the stain using a stiff nylon brush or use a rag for light stains before rinsing. You may apply a silicone-based sealer to keep future stains off between your tiles.

Alternatively, you can use hydrogen peroxide or oxygen-based bleach, but avoid using chlorine bleach to clean the grout as it can cause it to erode.
