Naya Rivera's Ex-Husband Files a Wrongful Death Lawsuit, Says Glee Star's Death Was Preventable

Naya Rivera's ex-husband files a wrongful death lawsuit against the United Water Conservation District and Parks Management Company. The estate of the late Glee star and the father of her son said that Naya Rivera's death was preventable.

Naya Rivera's ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey, is filing the lawsuit on behalf of his 5-year-old son, Josey.

The basis of the lawsuit

According to a report from TODAY, Naya Rivera's ex-husband and the late Glee star's estate thinks that the United Water Conservation District and Parks Management Company is responsible for the death of the actress. They claim that the boat which Naya and her son used during that day was not following safety standards. The plaintiffs also said that the lack of signs and warnings at the lake added to the wrongful death of Naya Rivera. According to the lawyer of Rivera's estate, Amjad M. Khan, the boat does not have the following which could have made it safer:

  • accessible ladder
  • adequate rope
  • radio
  • an anchor
  • any security mechanisms

The lawyer added, "Disturbingly, later inspection revealed that the boat was not even equipped with any flotation or lifesaving devices." The statement the Khan gave also said that the lake had no signs warning swimmer. He said, "And of course, there are no signs warning visitors about the dangers of swimming in the lake, to wear life vests when swimming or boating, or that dozens of others have drowned in Lake Piru."

The unfortunate death of the Glee star

Last July, Naya Rivera was swimming at Lake Piru with his son, Josey. The supposed day trip turned into a nightmare when Rivera accidentally drowned in the lake.

In July, when a press conference was made to explain the incident of that unfaithful day, Rivera's camp said that "Naya used the last of her strength to save her son."

However, the court filings last Tuesday said that Josey managed to return to the boat because he was closer to it. Upon reaching the boat, he tried to look for a rope to help his mother. The lawsuit also said, "Josey then looked back at the water and saw that Naya had disappeared."

Aside from making the defendants accountable for the death of the Glee star, the lawsuit also wants the defendants to be accountable for causing emotional distress to Naya Rivera's five-year-old son.

TODAY's report said that Ventura County's spokesperson said that they have not been served the lawsuit yet.
