A mom said her final words to her daughter as they both battle COVID-19 beside each other. The doctor had to relay her message because they wore hoods to keep their oxygen levels from getting too low.
In mid-October, Maria Rico and her daughter, Anabel Sharma, were admitted to the same hospital after they contracted COVID-19. They were placed a few beds away in the ICU. Medics moved Sharma's bed next to her mom's around two weeks later.
Moved beside one another days before the mom's death
However, the 49-year-old was devastated upon hearing about the sad news that her mom had just days to live. She and her mom were at the Leicester Royal Infirmary ICU holding hands in the photo one day before her mom died on November 1.
According to "Metro.co.uk," Sharma said that the photo was the first time she saw her mom since they have entered the hospital. Because her mom had a mask on while she had her helmet, she could not hear what Rico said.
She could not hear what her mom was saying
Sharma said that the doctor had to relay what her mom says because she could not hear her. She only heard the words "cremation" and "funeral" and that her mom signed a Do Not Resuscitate order.
Three people assessed Sharma's mom, saying that they were satisfied that Rico knew what she was doing. For five weeks, Sharma had to watch her mom's funeral through a screen as she lay on the hospital bed. She needs oxygen to breathe because she has suffered permanent lung damage since then.

Raise awareness about the coronavirus
London doctor Benji Rozen started a Facebook page, "Humans of COVID-19," where Sharma shared her story. He created the page to raise awareness of the reality of the effects of the coronavirus.
The mom-of-three became the main carer of the house after her son, Isaac, contracted COVID-19. Her mom, her husband, Bharat, and two other sons, Jacob, and Noah, caught the deadly disease within days.
Sharma became seriously unwell and started fainting because she had shortness of breath. Her oxygen levels reached 65 percent, and she had a fever of 40 degrees when the medics arrived. She asked the medics to check on her mother, and they confirmed Rico needed to be hospitalized.
Now, Sharma is at home but was diagnosed with PTSD and suffers night terrors. She sent gifts to the ICU staff that saved her life because she wanted to let them see her as a sick person. She felt bad that the medics worked hard every day to save people and how demoralized they felt.
Sharma wanted to let other people think about how hard it is for other people, especially for the frontliners.
