Health Wins We Forgot to Celebrate

Allergies with penicillin don't have to avoid penicillin

One of the most significant health wins we forgot to celebrate penicillin to children. If your child has a penicillin allergy, your child does not need to avoid penicillin anymore, including amoxicillin or other related medications.

This is according to the updated guidelines 2020 issued by the Canadian Paediatric Society. The guidelines say that children reported with penicillin allergies are safe to use the said medications after being diagnosed thoroughly and correctly.

This huge health development is essential for both children and parents, as penicillin-type antibiotics are the first-line treatment for many common childhood illnesses. If you choose to use other medications aside from penicillin, it will only result in more extended hospital stays and worse results with more severe infections.

Decreasing of chronic episodes in children

This significant health win was confirmed by the decreased number of children being brought to the hospital due to asthma. Asthma is a common chronic problem that is often seen in children. Usually, during winter and fall, hospital emergency departments and rooms are all filled with asthma children but not the previous year.

Fortunately, many other hospitals are also seeing this significant development and progress. But on the other hand, pediatricians still advise parents to follow their asthma medications.

Inappropriate vape ads are now banned

More younger children are being reported to indulge themselves in vaping, which is very alarming. Finally, because of this, the advertisement or any posts about vaping was banned from anywhere or by any means of promotion. Even retailing of vape should be in stores or places that are now visible to kids. Posting ads on buses or in any public space is also prohibited.

Contraceptive implant with longer terms

Health Canada finally approved Nexplanon in 2020. It is a type of contraceptive implant that is more likely to replace teens' methods to prevent pregnancy. It is a kind of flexible plastic rod that will be placed in your arm and left for almost three years.

But this contraceptive commonly affects the menstrual cycle of women. Either it will decrease the length of flow or the number of periods a woman will have.
