Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas welcomed a baby via surrogate pregnancy, joining the list of several celebrity couples who employed modern technology and surrogate moms to carry their child.
"We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate. We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family. Thank you so much," Priyanka wrote on her Instagram.
The couple married in 2018 and has expressed their plans of having children for quite some time now. In her interview on E! News, Priyanka said, "family is a big part of my life. It's always been a part of my dreams." She even said she wanted to create a "cricket team," which has 11 players.
In a later interview with Sunday Times, she backtracked, saying, "I do want children, as many as I can have." She added that she is unsure it would be 11 like a cricket team.
Nick also dreams of having babies soon. He told E! News that having kids was "obviously something we hope happens, and God willing, it comes together."
The couple got married at an elaborate Indian wedding in 2018.
Celebrity Couples in Surrogate Pregnancy
The Healthline lists an array of reasons why couples turn to surrogate pregnancy. The list includes women having health issues that prevent them from going through pregnancy, infertility issues, same-sex couples, and single people desiring to have biological children.
Here are some of the couples who had surrogate pregnancies:
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick
In 2009, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick announced that their surrogate mother gave birth to twins. The kids, named Marion Loretta Elwell Broderick and Tabitha Hodge Broderick, weighed 5.11 lbs and 6 lbs, respectively. Parker opted for surrogacy after having difficulty conceiving years after their son, who was conceived naturally. Parker did not publicly reveal what her fertility issues were, but she was 40 when they were trying to conceive another baby.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
The couple announced in 2011 the arrival of their daughter Faith Margaret Kidman Urban, who was conceived through surrogate pregnancy. Faith was born involving the celebrity couple closing the entire top floor hospital, entering it through a staff-only service elevator. The couple also had a daughter, Sunday Rose, who was two years old when Faith was born. The couple revealed that they had gestational surrogacy. It involves an embryo created via in vitro fertilization (IVF) and transferred to a surrogate who carries the baby until its full term.
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
In an interview with Wendy Williams, Burtka disclosed that their surrogate pregnancy involved "two different women." The couple took their "best guys" and implanted them to two different eggs of an anonymous woman. The second woman was the surrogate who carried the babies to term. The twins were born in 2010. In 2020, David Burtka shared in an interview in the "Wendy Williams Show" that their daughter, Harper Grace, was biologically his because of her "Hey everybody, I'm here!' personality. Meanwhile, the couple thinks that their son, Gideon Scott is likely Harris as "He's a little more heady and intellectual."
