Emma Heming Willis admitted in a recent interview that she has been struggling with her mental health amid husband Bruce Willis' aphasia diagnosis. The 43-year-old model told The Bump in an interview published on Thursday, May 19, that she puts her family's needs above her own, which she found does not make her any kind of hero.

Heming Willis expounded on that topic, saying "That amount of care for everyone else within my household had taken a toll on my mental health and overall health. And it served no one in my family."

Emma, who shares daughters Mabel and Evelyn with the 67-year-old Hollywood superstar, added that she is now learning how to "mother" herself and being intentional about "making the time for self-care" daily.

Exercise helping Emma during these tough times

Emma explained that someone told her not long ago that when you over-care for someone, you end up under-caring for yourself. According to Heming Willis, that stopped her in her tracks and really resonated with her.

Emma chooses to focus now instead on her basic baseline needs, which include exercise. Heming Willis said that working out is a time she can disconnect and do something that she knows makes her feel good overall. Emma added that she thinks it is important to find that one thing that makes you feel good and build from there, according to Page Six.

Emma surprised many when she revealed back in March Bruce's recent health struggles, posting a joint statement with the "Die Hard" actor's ex-wife, Demi Moore, and the former couple's daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah.

Their social media uploads announced at the time that with much consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him. They added that this is a really challenging time for their family and they are so appreciative of the continued love, compassion and support. Emma, Demi and the kids then said that they are moving through this as a strong family unit.

What is aphasia?

The statement concluded with a quote from Bruce himself that read, "Live it up. Together we plan to do just that." It is not all doom and gloom for the Willis family as Emma recently posted sweet new photos with her husband during an "off the grid" camping trip back in April. Heming Willis wrote in the caption, "Mom & Dad in their favorite habitat."

Emma married Bruce back in March 2009, with the couple welcoming 10-year-old Mabel and eight-year-old Evelyn in 2012 and 2014, respectively. This was the second marriage for the Golden Globe winner. Willis was previously married to Moore, who is now 59 years old, from 1987 to 2000.

According to the Mayo Clinic, aphasia is a condition that affects a person's ability to communicate. Aphasia can also affect one's speech, as well as the way he or she writes and understands both spoken and written language.
